Taiwan: Hike in sugar prices

The outbreak of COVID-19 epidemic has driven the demand for disease preventive products like surgical masks and rubbing alcohol. This has ultimately affected the sugar supply as it is used to produce alcohol.

Sugar is a major ingredient in the production of many food products including wine and chilli sauce. An official attached with the agricultural department of Taitung Country has expressed concerned over this. A large quantity of sugar has been used to the production of isopropyl alcohol, an antimicrobial disinfectant since the COVID-19 outbreak. This has resulted in the hike in the price for sugar by 10 per cent. Some manufacturers have already begun hoarding sugar fearing further shortage, said an official.

According to The Taiwan Sugar Corporation has appealed the public to not to worry since it will ensure that the price of retail sugar remains steady.
