Sugar scam: Pakistan government makes inquiry report public

Pakistan government after approval of the Federal Cabinet made the sugar inquiry report open for public. The commission was set up to find out the reasons behind the sudden rise in sugar prices in the country.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference at Islamabad Information Minister Shibli Faraz said the government is committed for accountability and transparency.
Mirza Shahzad Akbar, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Accountability said, “As per the report, the sugar millers paid less than support price to cane cultivators. They also cut the weight of sugarcane by 20 to 30 per cent than the actual weight.”

“The government has given subsidy of Rs 29 billion to sugar mills. The income of 88 mills after tax refund is Rs 10 billion and six big groups have 51% share in the sugar sector,” he said.
