Smuggling of sugar into Kenya affects millers and farmers

The illegal transportation of sugar into Kenya from neighbouring countries has affected farmers as well as millers. The farmers demand the implementation of sugar import regulations to keep a check on the smuggling of the commodity.

According to the media report, the farmers have singled out the country’s porous borders as the main source of the flooding of the local markets with cheap and illegal sugar.

Michael Arum, associated with the Kenya National Alliance of Sugarcane Farmers Organisation (KNASFO) said, “The local farmers are facing problems as the dumping of sugar in Kenya has increased to a crisis level. Local farmers left with no market for their produce.”

“The sugar produced in Kenya remains stuck in warehouses and the commodity imported from other countries finds a way to the market and sold at a cheap rate,” he further added.
