Aliko Dangote to build sugar factory in Ghana

Accra : Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has announced plans to set up a large-scale sugar processing factory in Ghana’s Bono Region. The initiative aims to reduce Ghana’s annual sugar import costs, currently estimated at $162 million, reports GhanaWeb. The new facility, called Dangote Sugar Refinery, will be located in Kwame-Danso. According to Dangote, the factory will have the capacity to crush 12,000 tons of sugarcane per day and will operate on an irrigated area covering 25,000 hectares. It will produce sugar, molasses, and ethanol.

In a LinkedIn post, Dangote described the project as “a new chapter” for Ghana, noting that all necessary permits and land have already been secured. The venture aligns with Ghana’s “One District, One Factory” initiative, which encourages industrialisation through district-level manufacturing. “We’re moving forward with full support from the Ghanaian government. This project will reduce Ghana’s dependence on sugar imports and help build a more sustainable, locally driven economy,” he said. Dangote added that beyond its economic benefits, the factory is expected to create jobs and contribute to broader industrial growth in Africa. “This is more than just a factory. It’s a step toward greater self-reliance, job creation, and transformation across the continent,” he wrote.
