Andhra Pradesh: Kovur MLA seeks clearance of 15-year-old dues of sugar mill workers

Nellore: Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy on Monday urged the government to clear the long-pending dues of workers of the closed Kovur sugar factory, raising the issue in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Deccan Chronicle reported.

The factory, which has remained shut for the past 15 years, once employed nearly 3,000 workers and supported thousands of families in and around Kovur. Following its closure, workers were left without payments and have since been struggling to receive their dues.

Addressing the House, the MLA said nearly 2,000 workers have reportedly died over the years, many while facing financial hardship and health problems while awaiting settlement of their pending wages and benefits. She described the situation as distressing, stating that several families have suffered due to non-payment of dues.

She further informed the Assembly that around 1,000 surviving workers, most of them elderly and dealing with age-related ailments, are still waiting for crores of rupees that have remained unpaid for over a decade.

Appealing to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the State Industries Minister, Prashanthi Reddy called for the immediate release of the pending amounts to provide relief to the affected workers and their families.

She urged the government to act promptly to resolve the 15-year-old issue and ensure justice for the workers who have been waiting for their dues.
