Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the world’s first 2G Bioethanol plant at Assam Bio Ethanol Pvt. Ltd. (ABEPL), a subsidiary of Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), in Golaghat, Assam. Developed to produce bioethanol from bamboo, the pioneering facility marks a significant step toward clean energy and sustainability in India.
Describing the plant as a symbol of innovation and national pride, PM Modi dedicated the facility to the nation, stating its purpose is to promote clean energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and embark on the path of self-reliance in meeting its energy requirements.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Hardeep Singh Puri. The event celebrated technological advancement and environmental responsibility, while also acknowledging the dedicated efforts of the teams involved in bringing the project to life—including Arya Engineers.
Overall, an investment of Rs. 5,000 crores have been made for the Bioethanol plant. The plant will require 500,000 tonnes of bamboo annually and will produce 50 TMT of Ethanol, 19 TMT of Furfural, and 11 TMT of Acetic Acid. The bioethanol plant is based on technology from Chempolis, a Finnish company.
