Assam government to offer subsidised sugar to eligible beneficiaries

The Assam government is set to provide lentils, sugar, and salt at subsidised rates to eligible beneficiaries beginning in October-November. The announcement was made by Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai during a meeting held in Kamrup Metro on Wednesday, August 20.

The awareness programme was organised by the Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs Department of Kamrup Metropolitan District, bringing together fair price shopkeepers and representatives from Gaon Panchayat Cooperative Societies. Speaking as the chief guest, Minister Rai stated that the initiative will launch in 10 districts on October 1 and will be extended to 25 districts, including Kamrup Metro, from November.

He called on shopkeepers to ensure fair and transparent distribution of these subsidised goods. The scheme will benefit ration card holders across the state under the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013.

Highlighting the purpose behind the move, the minister said the government intends to ease the financial strain on households by offering essential commodities at prices lower than the market rate.
