Thakurgaon: The 68th sugarcane threshing season of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills Ltd. was inaugurated this afternoon with the dumping of sugarcane into a donga at the mill’s Cane Carrier premises, reports BSS News.
The inauguration was conducted by Rashidul Hassan, Chairman (Additional Responsibilities) of the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, who attended the programme as the chief guest.
The ceremony, organised by Thakurgaon Sugar Mills Ltd., was presided over by the mill’s Managing Director, Md. Shahjahan Kabir.
Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana, Superintendent of Police Md. Belal Hossain, BSFIC Secretary Mohammad Mujibur Rahman and BSFIC (TS) Chief Manjurul Haque were present as special guests. Senior officials and employees from Thakurgaon Sugar Mill, Panchagarh Sugar Mill and Setabganj Sugar Mill also attended the event.
For the current sugarcane threshing season, Thakurgaon Sugar Mill has set a target of 90,000 metric tons of sugarcane crushing, with a production target of 5,670 metric tons of sugar and an extraction rate target of 6.30 percent.
During the 2024–2025 planting season, the mill has 6,060 acres of standing sugarcane. The planting target for the 2025–2026 season has been set at 6,500 acres. So far, sugarcane has been planted on about 3,000 acres of land in the current season, with planting still underway.
The duration of the threshing operations is expected to be between 70 and 80 working days.
Thakurgaon Sugar Mill has consistently ranked first or second in sugar production nationwide, maintaining a comparatively high standard of sugar quality and extraction. Officials expressed optimism that the mill will sustain this performance throughout the season.
