Bangladesh: Government approves procurement of 25,000 tons sugar

The government on Wednesday approved several procurement proposals to address the rising domestic demand. These include the import of one cargo of LNG, 70,000 tons of fertiliser, and 25,000 tons of refined sugar.

The approval was granted during the 30th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase, held at the Cabinet Division Conference Room in the Secretariat. Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed chaired the meeting.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dr. Ahmed explained that the Energy and Mineral Resources Division would secure one LNG cargo from the spot market through an international quotation method, with M/S Aramco Trading Singapore Pte Ltd, Singapore, as the supplier. The estimated cost is around Tk517.19 crore, with the price set at $12.289 per MMBtu.

Under two separate proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Industries, the committee also approved the procurement of 40,000 tons of DAP fertiliser by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). This will be sourced from MA’ADEN, Saudi Arabia, at a cost of Tk383.62 crore ($781 per ton).

Additionally, the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will acquire 30,000 metric tons of bagged granular urea fertiliser from KAFCO, Bangladesh, for an estimated Tk164.91 crore.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Commerce’s proposal for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to import 25,000 tons of refined sugar via international open tender was also approved. The total cost for this procurement will be around Tk175.98 crore, with the price per kilogram set at Tk106.66.
