Bangladesh: Govt approves purchase of 15,000 metric tonnes sugar

A government committee gave its approval on Tuesday for the procurement of approximately 130,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser and 15,000 metric tonnes of sugar to address the increasing demand across the country.

The decisions were made during a virtual meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP), chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

Officials from the Cabinet Division stated that, based on a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce, the government will purchase 15,000 metric tonnes of white sugar from the Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) using the local Direct Procurement Method (DPM). This will cost around Tk 173.37 crore, with a set price of Tk 115.58 per kilogram of sugar.

In response to two proposals from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will acquire 40,000 metric tonnes of MOP fertiliser from the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) through a state-level agreement (9th lot), amounting to approximately Tk 174.42 crore, with a price of $356.25 per tonne.

Additionally, the BADC will procure another 30,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser from OCP, NUTRICROPS, Morocco, under a state-level agreement worth about Tk 208.81 crore, with each tonne priced at $568.67.

Separately, responding to two proposals from the Ministry of Industries, the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will purchase 30,000 metric tonnes of bulk granular urea fertiliser from SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company, Saudi Arabia, under the 4th lot for the fiscal year (FY26), at a cost of Tk 155.45 crore, with each tonne priced at $422.66.

The BCIC will also buy another 30,000 metric tonnes of bagged granular urea fertiliser from KAFCO, Bangladesh, under the 6th lot for FY26, amounting to Tk 143.48 crore, with a price of $390.75 per tonne.
