Bangladesh: Tarique Rahman promises to modernise Thakurgaon mill, reopen Panchagarh sugar factory

Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson Tarique Rahman has promised to modernise the Thakurgaon Sugar Mill and reopen the Panchagarh Sugar Mill if his party moves forward with its plans, The Daily Star reported.

Rahman made the announcement while addressing an election rally at the playground of Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School. He also promised to promote agro-based industries in northern districts such as Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, and Dinajpur to generate employment for local residents.

“We want to ensure employment for the people of this region so that they can live comfortably through decent jobs,” he said.

Rahman added that the party intends to support farmers by waiving agricultural loans and encouraging the growth of agriculture-related industries. “All industries related to agriculture, including mills and factories, will be established across the northern region so that sustainable employment can be created for the local population,” he said.

He noted that many educated young people in the region remain unemployed and said the party plans to provide them with training. The programmes may cover agriculture, machinery, and other trades, with the goal of building a skilled workforce capable of finding employment locally or abroad.

Sharing his broader vision, Rahman said the party aims to rebuild the country by working together with people from all sections of society. “We have carried out movements and struggles, and now we want to rebuild the nation by taking all people along,” he said.
