Bihar: Govt reserves sugarcane from 2,401 villages to run two mills

Patna: In a major step toward reviving two closed sugar mills, the sugarcane industries department has reserved sugarcane from 2,401 villages in Darbhanga and Madhubani districts, an official said on Friday, The Times of India reported.

Under the plan, farmers from 1,018 villages will supply sugarcane to the Raiyam sugar mill in Darbhanga, while farmers from 1,383 villages will supply cane to the Sakri sugar mill in Madhubani. The official said the decision ensures a steady and sufficient supply of sugarcane to both mills.
The state’s cooperative department will revive and operate both closed mills.
The official added that farmers from 686 villages in Madhubani and 697 villages in Darbhanga have been directed to supply sugarcane to the Sakri mill. Similarly, farmers from 438 villages in Madhubani and 580 villages in Darbhanga will supply cane to the Raiyam mill.
As of 2025, Bihar has 18 sugar mills that are no longer operational, including 15 previously run by the Bihar State Sugar Corporation. In November 2025, the NDA government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar approved a proposal to restart nine of these closed mills and establish 25 new sugar mills across the state.
