Kanpur: A five-day exposure visit and training programme for sugarcane farmers from Bihar has begun at the National Sugar Institute in Kanpur. The programme is being organised at the request of the state’s cane industry department under the Mukhyamantri Ganna Vikas Yojana, Bhaskar reported.
Speaking at the inauguration, Seema Paroha, director of the National Sugar Institute, said the institute aims to provide farmers with practical knowledge to help them increase sugarcane production and improve their income.
She said the use of better farming practices would not only benefit farmers but also sugar mills, as improved quality sugarcane would help increase sugar recovery during processing.
A group of 50 farmers from Bihar is taking part in the training programme. The delegation is being led by assistant directors Vivek Singh and Roshan Patel, along with cane extension officers Aditya Kumar Pallav, Jagdish Prasad Chaurasia and Anup Kumar Awasthi.
Experts at the institute will train farmers on modern techniques to improve sugarcane cultivation. The sessions will cover advanced methods to increase production, management of pests and diseases in sugarcane crops, and ways to improve soil health. Farmers will also be given information about improved sugarcane varieties suitable for northern India and the latest methods used in jaggery production.
The training sessions will be conducted by Ashok Kumar, professor in the agricultural chemistry section, along with Lokesh Babar and senior technical assistant Mahendra Pratap Singh.
