Cargill to build new corn ethanol plant in Brazil

Sao Paulo: A unit of U.S.-based grain trader Cargill will set up a corn ethanol plant next to its sugarcane facility in Brazil’s Center-Western state of Goias, the company announced on Friday.

The project was first reported by agribusiness portal AgFeed. Cargill later confirmed the plan but did not share further details.

Cargill already makes ethanol from both sugarcane and corn in Goias through its local biofuels arm, Cargill Bioenergia. The new plant marks another step in the company’s efforts to expand its biofuel production in Brazil, one of the world’s leading grain producers.

Earlier this year, in February, Cargill purchased a 50% stake in SJC Bioenergia. The deal gave it control over SJC’s operations in the towns of Quirinopolis and Cachoeira Dourada, also located in Goias.
