Chandigarh to launch initiative to reduce excessive sugar consumption in schools

Chandigarh: In a bid to ensure lower intake of sugar among children, Chandigarh’s education department will roll out a citywide initiative from July 1 aimed at cutting down excessive sugar consumption in schools. The campaign will include the installation of ‘Sugar Boards’ in both government and private schools and a stricter clampdown on the sale of high-fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS) foods on school premises.

The move comes in response to a Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) directive asking affiliated schools to raise awareness about high sugar intake. However, Chandigarh is taking it a step further, combining education with enforcement. The initiative will ban the sale and promotion of sugary snacks and drinks such as samosas, puffs, and sweetened beverages within school grounds, according to officials from the education department.

The ‘Sugar Boards’ will serve as educational tools, displaying information about daily sugar limits, the sugar content in common snacks, and associated health risks like obesity and diabetes. They will also offer suggestions for healthier food alternatives.

Schools will also host seminars, workshops, and awareness sessions for students, teachers, and parents about sugar consumption.

“Our goal is to create school environments that support healthier choices and nurture children’s well-being. Reducing sugar intake is crucial not only to prevent diseases but also to improve concentration, energy levels, and overall growth,” Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, Director of School Education, Chandigarh was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

All schools are required to submit reports and photographic evidence documenting the establishment of ‘Sugar Boards’ and related awareness activities by July 15. This will enable the department to monitor implementation and effectiveness.
