Chinese delegation expresses interest in investing in Fiji’s new sugar mill project

The Fijian Government is considering setting up a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, with discussions underway with a Chinese delegation interested in supporting the project.

Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, confirmed that early talks have taken place and could lead to a public-private partnership, a first for the country’s sugar sector.

“We had a visit from a Chinese delegation keen to help establish a sugar mill in Rakiraki. They appear to be serious about the idea, and our Prime Minister has spoken to us at the Ministry about the need for a mill in Rakiraki,” Singh said.

Though no official agreements have been signed, the Minister described the initial discussions as promising and aligned with the Government’s wider efforts to revive and strengthen Fiji’s sugar industry.

Singh added that the new mill would likely be built on the site of the former Rakiraki mill. If the proposal is found to be viable, a formal Cabinet submission will be made in the coming months.

“They’ve outlined their interest in investing, and we’ve said we’re open to working with them. If everything goes well, my Ministry will submit a Cabinet paper in the near future,” he said.

The project reflects the Government’s push to ensure long-term sustainability of the sugar industry through investment and modern infrastructure.
