In a recorded address to the gathering on Day 2 of India Bioenergy & Technology Expo (IBET) 2025, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said that the country is transitioning to a “cleaner, circular, and climate-aligned” energy economy, in sync with the vision of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said, “India has become one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets. As of July 2025, the country has achieved 50% non-fossil fuel power generation capacity five years ahead of its 2030 target, with 242.8 gigawatts from green sources out of a total installed capacity of 484.8 gigawatts. This puts India well on its way to its COP26 pledge of reaching 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030”.
Puri said that the CBG is a key component of green energy. “The CBG mandate is 1% blending in 2025-26 and later scaling upto 5% by 2028-29”.
The Minister highlighted that ethanol blending has helped save valuable foreign exchange, supported farmers, and cut down on emissions.
Shripad Naik, Minister of State, Minister of Renewable Energy and New Energy said that bioenergy has been a transformative force.
“The government has launched key initiatives like the National Bioenergy Program and the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme to support this sector. I am happy to say that over 100 biofuel and biogas projects have been commissioned since 2022, and compressed biogas (CBG) projects are gaining momentum nationwide”, he said.
