The Coca-Cola Company said Tuesday that it will launch a version of its signature drink made with U.S. cane sugar.
The announcement follows a post by former President Donald Trump on Truth Social, in which he claimed he had spoken to Coca-Cola about using “REAL Cane Sugar” in its U.S. products and that the company had agreed. Initially, Coca-Cola did not confirm the claim, telling NBC News last week that while it appreciated Trump’s “enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand,” details would be shared soon.
In its Tuesday earnings release, the company confirmed the new product, saying, “As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range. This addition is designed to complement the company’s strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.”
Currently, Coca-Cola sold in the U.S. is typically sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, while cane sugar is used in other countries such as Mexico and parts of Europe. In the U.S., versions made with cane sugar are often referred to informally as “Mexican Coke.”, reported NBC News.
The new cane sugar version is intended to complement the existing Coca-Cola lineup, not replace it.
Trump praised the move last week, saying, “This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!”
