Delhi accelerates net-zero push, Upcoming budget will be a green budget: Delhi Environment Minister

The Delhi Government is working aggressively towards achieving net-zero targets and building a sustainable capital, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said while addressing the India Climate Week in New Delhi, organised by the Carbon Makers Association of India (CMAI).

Sirsa said the Delhi government is focusing on transforming the national capital into a greener, more sustainable city, though the scale of the task is significant given the size of the population.

He said that the upcoming Delhi Budget will be presented as a Green Budget, reflecting the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible development and climate-focused policy measures.

A highlight of the event was the presentation of Net Zero scarves to delegates, symbolising CMAI’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and promoting climate-conscious initiatives.

Rohit Kumar from CMAI said that this year’s India Climate Week is centred on themes such as global collaboration, environmental investments and incentives, circular economy, and sectoral decarbonisation.

Speaking on the role of emerging clean fuels, Abhay Bakre, Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said India needs renewable fuels to replace fossil fuels.

“This is where green hydrogen comes into play. It can play a key role in decarbonising sectors that are difficult to electrify,” he said.

Bakre highlighted that green hydrogen could play a crucial role in the transport sector, especially in segments where battery-based solutions may not be viable. He added that the shipping sector has significant potential to adopt green hydrogen as a fuel, and India has the opportunity to emerge as a global leader in producing green hydrogen derivatives.

During the event, a report on Indian CCTS prepared by Ernst & Young (EY) in collaboration with CMAI was released.

Kapil Bansal, Partner at EY, said the current geopolitical environment has further highlighted the importance of accelerating the global energy transition.

“The geopolitical situation has sharpened the focus on energy transition and underscored its tremendous importance for energy security and sustainability,” he said.
