Few countries have issued warnings to their citizens due to Delhi’s hazardous air pollution. The Singapore High Commission has advised Singaporeans living in Delhi and nearby areas to exercise caution. Canada and the U.K. have similarly issued advisories for travelers in northern Indian cities.
Delhi has faced high pollution levels for several weeks, but the situation worsened this week, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching far above the healthy threshold. The thick smog led to the cancellation of many flights and caused significant delays for trains.

In response to the worsening crisis, the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi highlighted that the Indian government has activated the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 4, the most stringent set of measures. These restrictions curb industrial and construction emissions. Schools and offices have been asked to operate in a hybrid mode, and residents, especially children and those with respiratory or heart conditions, are advised to limit outdoor activities. Citizens are also urged to wear masks when stepping outside and to follow local guidance. The commission noted that travel may be affected, and travelers should check with airlines for updates.
India’s air pollution monitoring system tracks AQI levels up to 500, so readings beyond this may vary internationally. GRAP Stage 4 is implemented when the AQI exceeds 450 to prevent further deterioration. The plan restricts polluting vehicles, halts construction, demolition, mining, and stone-crushing operations, and advises residents to avoid all outdoor activities. Masks are recommended for unavoidable outdoor exposure, and pollution is particularly severe during peak commuting hours, prompting residents to stay indoors in the mornings and evenings whenever possible.
