EU sugar beet planting area to fall in 2026-27: Report

European sugar beet planting is expected to decline in the 2026-27 season, according to industry executives speaking at the Dubai Sugar Conference on Thursday, Reuters reported.

Marion Hoff, Europe sales director at Tereos, one of the world’s largest sugar producers, said sugar beet acreage in the European Union is likely to fall by between 6% and 7% in the coming season.

Echoing the outlook, an executive from commodity supply chain services firm Czarnikow said sugar beet planting across the EU could decline by as much as 5% during the same period.

Stephen Geldart, head of analysis at Czarnikow, said the reduction in acreage is expected to weigh on output. He forecast that total EU sugar production in 2026-27 will drop to about 15.5 million metric tonnes, down from an estimated 17.1 million tonnes in the 2025-26 season.
