Fiji: Dr Vinesh Kumar appointed as Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and sugar Industry

Dr Vinesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, has been appointed as the new Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry. The appointment follows a transparent, merit-based recruitment process conducted in May, according to Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Luke Rokovada, according to the local news report.

In an official statement, Rokovada confirmed that the Commission shortlisted and interviewed five candidates on 20 May. Based on his exceptional performance during the interview, the Commission recommended Dr Kumar for the position. Following due diligence, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka approved the appointment on 12 June.

Dr Kumar brings with him extensive public service experience and a strong background in leadership, governance, and policy implementation. Rokovada expressed confidence that his appointment would strengthen the Ministry’s efforts to revitalize the sugar sector and promote inclusive programs for Fiji’s diverse multi-ethnic communities.

Dr Kumar began his career in the Ministry of Agriculture, eventually rising to the role of Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways from 2021 to 2023. He later served as Permanent Secretary for Special Projects in the Ministry of Sugar and was appointed CEO of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji in late 2023.

Well-regarded for his professional accomplishments and in-depth understanding of Fiji’s socio-economic landscape, Dr Kumar holds a degree in Agriculture from the University of the South Pacific (USP), a Master’s in Public Policy Administration from the National University of Singapore, and a PhD in Climate Change from USP.

Rokovada described the appointment as a testament to Dr Kumar’s proven leadership and commitment to national service. He congratulated Dr Kumar and expressed confidence in his ability to bring effective leadership and a clear vision to the role.

Meanwhile, Reshmi Kumari, who had been serving as Acting Permanent Secretary, has returned to her substantive post as Director of Planning, Policy, and Research at the Ministry.
