Fiji: Fire breaks out at Rarawai sugar mill in Ba

A fire broke out at the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba around 11.30 a.m. today, the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry has confirmed, reports The Fiji Times.

According to initial reports, the blaze began in the powerhouse section of the mill. The National Fire Authority (NFA) is on site working to contain the flames.

In a statement, the Ministry said both the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and the NFA are working together to stop the fire from spreading. “The priority is the safety of the people and the workers at the site,” it said.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, has been briefed on the situation, and the Ministry is maintaining close contact with FSC mill management.

Officials said further updates will be released as more details come to hand.
