Fiji government intensifies efforts to revive sugar industry through modernisation, mechanisation, and research

The Fiji government is stepping up efforts to revitalise the sugar industry by focusing on modernisation, mechanisation, and research-driven solutions.

Speaking during the handover of the Pre-Season Burnt Cane Rehabilitation Grant to farmers in Sabeto, Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring the sector to its former strength.

As part of this push, Singh announced plans for a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, noting that expressions of interest for the project have already been advertised.

“We are working to revive this vital industry and bring it back to what it used to be. The government is committed to supporting our farmers and ensuring the future sustainability of sugar,” he said.

To boost efficiency, new farming equipment—including fertiliser applicators, tractors, and harvesters suitable for hilly terrain—is being introduced. In addition, support from the Indian Government will provide 12 agricultural drones and a mobile soil testing laboratory to further enhance innovation and productivity.

Singh encouraged farmers to adopt recommended cane varieties and take advantage of available government grants to improve yields and embrace modern farming practices.

He emphasised that the future of the sugar industry lies in continued investment in modern technology, research, and strong support for farmers. The government, he added, will continue to work closely with stakeholders to build a more resilient and sustainable sugar sector.
