The construction of a new sugar mill has started in Rakiraki as part of government efforts to revive the sugar industry, reports The Fiji Times.
Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh said the project reflects the government’s vision to restore the industry to its former strength by boosting production and introducing modern farming practices.
“We are working to revive this vital industry and bring it back to what it used to be,” Singh said, adding that the government is committed to supporting farmers and ensuring the sector’s long-term sustainability.
Singh was in Sabeto last week to distribute pre-season burnt cane rehabilitation grants to affected farmers. He assured growers that the government is actively addressing long-standing issues, including labour shortages, through overseas recruitment and greater use of machines.
According to Singh, initiatives such as tractor service providers and fertiliser applicators are already helping farmers, while specialised harvesters for hilly terrain will be introduced soon. He also highlighted that several grants and support schemes are available to help farmers increase production and adopt modern practices.
