Tomasi Tunabuna, Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, recently visited the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) at Drasa in Lautoka and appreciated the work of the staff while highlighting the institute’s contribution to research, innovation, and technical support for the sugar sector, FBC News reported.
SRIF plays an important role in supporting the sugar industry in the country and has helped improve the livelihoods of farmers.
Set up in 2006, the institute carries out a range of activities aimed at improving sugarcane production. These include developing new cane varieties, conducting soil and leaf analysis, cane testing, screening for pests and diseases, promoting crop diversification, producing disease-free seedcane, and managing projects supported by international donors.
During the visit, the minister toured the laboratories, research plots, and seedcane facilities. He also interacted with researchers and staff members to review ongoing programmes and encouraged them to continue their work with dedication and innovation.
Tunabuna said the government remains committed to promoting science-based solutions to support sustainable growth in the sugar industry.
