Charan Jeath Singh, Fiji’s Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, visited the facilities of La Liga Agrícola Industrial de la Caña de Azúcar (LAICA), a prominent player in Costa Rica’s sugarcane sector.
The visit aimed to understand how LAICA has effectively grown its operations by developing a range of value-added sugar products. Singh viewed this as an opportunity to gather valuable insights that could be adapted to enhance Fiji’s sugar industry.
While touring the facility, Singh examined LAICA’s extensive product portfolio, which includes brown sugar, white sugar, powdered sugar, liquid sugar, powdered drinks, energy drinks, and cake toppings.
The Minister expressed interest in adopting similar strategies in Fiji, where the sugar sector continues to play a crucial role in the economy and in supporting rural livelihoods. He emphasized that the knowledge gained from LAICA’s model could aid ongoing efforts to boost innovation, productivity, and sustainability in Fiji’s sugar industry.
Singh is currently in San José, Costa Rica, attending the 66th International Sugar Organization Council Workshop and Meeting. The event, which began on 27 May 2025, is themed “Building a Sweeter Tomorrow” and includes an international workshop focused on the future of the global sugar industry.
