Ghana: Komenda sugar factory to be operational by end of 2026

The Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has assured that the Komenda sugar factory is expected to begin operations by the end of 2026.

She disclosed that land has already been secured for the establishment of a sugarcane plantation to supply the factory. According to her, an Interim Management Committee (IMC) has also been inaugurated to carry out a detailed technical assessment of the facility and submit recommendations to guide its operationalisation.

โ€œWe have acquired land for sugarcane cultivation in the Komenda area. The people in this enclave already have the expertise in sugarcane farming, so there is no need for extensive training. When we engaged the farmers, they showed readiness and enthusiasm. We are hopeful that the factory will be operational by the end of 2026,โ€ she said.

Mrs Ofosu-Adjare made these remarks during a visit by the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, to the ministry in Accra last Thursday.
She noted that ongoing reforms within the ministry were aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in regulatory administration, creating a predictable business environment and positioning Ghana as the most business-friendly country in Africa.

โ€œIn the past, investors became frustrated and left the country, sometimes simply because of difficulties in obtaining registration certificates. These reforms are intended to create an enabling environment where businesses can thrive,โ€ she explained.

She highlighted initiatives such as the introduction of Ghanaโ€™s Be Ready self-assessment reports, an online reform management and progress-tracking system, and an interactive public-private consultation portal.
