Govt examining new support scheme for sugarcane farmers: Sanjivani sugar mill administrator

Margao: The Administrator of the Sanjivani sugar factory, Rajesh Prabhudesai, said on Thursday that the government is closely reviewing a proposal aimed at offering additional support to sugarcane farmers in the state, reports The Goan Everyday.

According to Prabhudesai, the Sanjivani factory administration has submitted a scheme to the government that seeks to assist farmers who are unable to meet the costs of harvesting their sugarcane and transporting it to factories.

He informed the media that the government has been extending financial help to sugarcane growers for the past few years through a subsidy programme.

Prabhudesai added that the government has already released a notification for the 2025–26 financial year, directing farmers to cut their sugarcane and bring it to the factories, with a guaranteed payment of ₹3,290 per tonne.

Acknowledging that many farmers are unhappy with this notification, he said the administration has put forward a fresh proposal to improve the situation and ease the burden on growers.

He explained that, if approved, the proposed scheme would allow farmers to benefit even when they take their sugarcane to mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Prabhudesai said they are now waiting for the government to issue the notification for the new scheme.
