Gurdaspur cooperative sugar mill begins operations, easing burden on local farmers

New Delhi: The Gurdaspur Cooperative Sugar Mill, built with a crushing capacity of 5,000 tonnes of cane per day (TCD), began operations on Wednesday. The mill, formally inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on November 26, is expected to greatly boost the region’s agro-industrial landscape and provide much-needed convenience to sugarcane growers who previously had to travel 60–70 kilometres to sell their produce, reports Hindustan Times.

Jagdev Singh, a farmer from Chitti village, said he had brought his sugarcane trolley to the mill the previous day and it was unloaded without delay. He added that farmers would no longer need to travel outside the district to sell their crop, calling the new facility a major relief.

The modern unit will produce sulphur-less sugar, a higher-quality variant anticipated to fetch better prices in the market.

A spokesperson said the power generated at the mill will be supplied to PSPCL, helping support the state’s energy needs while improving the plant’s operational efficiency. The mill is also expected to generate both direct and indirect employment for local residents.

The mill’s general manager, Subash Chander, urged farmers to supply clean and properly prepared sugarcane as per the prescribed standards.
