Gopalganj: Heavy rains and strong winds on Saturday have caused extensive damage to sugarcane crops in eastern parts of the district, destroying fields across nearly 25,000 acres. Some areas of bordering Saran, East Champaran, Muzaffarpur, and Siwan districts have also suffered significant crop losses, reports Live Hindustan.
This year, sugarcane ready for harvest in the last week of November was standing tall in the fields, but the sudden strong winds caused the stalks to topple.
Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Executive Vice President of the sugarcane department at Bharat Sugar Mill, Sidhwalia, said the damage assessment was carried out on Friday and Saturday, confirming that large sections of the crop had fallen in the fields. During inspections, mill officials advised farmers to tie up the fallen sugarcane stalks to salvage as much as possible.
For the 2025-26 crushing season, the sugar mill had set a target of 60 lakh quintals of sugarcane. The crop damage has raised concerns not only for farmers but also for the sugar mill management. Currently, farmers are working hard to save the fallen crop and minimize losses.
