The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in ten districts of Kerala: Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kottayam. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for four other districts.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm in 24 hours), with isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours), is expected in parts of Kerala between June 14 and June 17. On June 12, 13, and 18, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in isolated areas across the state. Furthermore, isolated heavy rainfall (7-11 cm in 24 hours) is likely to occur in Lakshadweep on June 14 and 15.
The southwest monsoon, which had paused briefly for nearly two weeks, has become active again, bringing significant rainfall across various parts of Karnataka early on Thursday. The IMD has issued a seven-day rainfall warning for the state, predicting widespread showers in almost all districts until June 17.
In particular, the Hubballi area of Karnataka’s Dharwad district experienced heavy rainfall early Thursday, causing severe waterlogging in several areas, especially in Hanashi village.
The IMD forecasts that rainfall will continue to be widespread in coastal and north interior Karnataka until June 17. In south interior Karnataka, rains will be fairly widespread until June 14, before becoming widespread again for the following three days.
For the coastal districts of Karnataka, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rain, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 km/h. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in one or two locations, especially in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts.
