At least two major sugar refineries in Indonesia have been forced to halt production after delays in receiving government import permits for raw sugar, hurting operations in one of the world’s biggest sugar‑processing markets, Bloomberg reported.
Indonesia depends heavily on imported raw sugar for its refineries, which process the commodity into refined sugar used widely in the country’s food and beverage sector. However, a slow bureaucratic approval process for 2026 import licences has left some companies unable to bring in the raw material they need to keep plants running.
The officials have denied commenting or sharing further details, it said.
