India may export 8 lakh tonnes of sugar this season: Food Secretary

New Delhi: India is expected to export around 8 lakh tonnes of sugar in the 2024-25 season, which ends in September. This is below the 10 lakh tonnes of exports officially allowed by the government, a senior official said on Thursday, reported PTI.

So far, the country has exported 3 lakh tonnes of sugar, and another 60,000 tonnes are currently at ports ready for shipment, according to a senior official from the food ministry.

“We will export 8 lakh tonnes out of the total quota permitted,” said Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra at a press conference.

The food ministry has projected that total sugar production will reach 26 lakh tonnes during the current season, and most of that has already been produced by sugar mills.

India had completely stopped sugar exports in the 2023-24 season due to concerns about domestic availability. Export restrictions were eased in January this year, allowing shipments to resume.
