Indian Biogas Association signs MoU with IOCL to boost bioenergy and bio-hydrogen sector

The Indian Biogas Association (IBA) has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) to advance the development of the bioenergy and bio-hydrogen sectors in India, the association said.

This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both organizations to drive growth in the bioenergy industry. According to a joint statement, IBA and IOCL will work together to establish a knowledge centre that will support shared initiatives. The collaboration will involve pooling resources such as advanced technology, infrastructure, and a skilled workforce to further expand the biofuels ecosystem in the country.

The two organizations also plan to actively engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and think tanks to shape strategies for the sector. A strong emphasis will be placed on training and capacity-building programmes to support the sector’s growth and create a robust talent pipeline.

“At the policy level, IBA is already collaborating with several ministries to frame supportive regulations for the biogas, bio-CNG, and broader renewable energy segments. This partnership will help facilitate coordinated efforts between central and state ministries. Together with IOCL, we aim to propose policy incentives that cater to different categories of biofuels,” said Gaurav Kedia, Chairman of IBA.

The MoU also includes provisions for aligning ongoing research and development in biofuels, with a focus on encouraging industry-institute collaboration.

Established in 2011 and restructured in 2015, the Indian Biogas Association is the country’s first professional and nationwide body representing biogas plant operators, equipment manufacturers, planners, and stakeholders from public policy, academia, and research. The association is also collaborating with the German Biogas Association to promote the sector’s development in India and support the transition toward a more sustainable energy future.
