India’s Numaligarh Refinery Ltd to collaborate with TotalEnergies to set up SAF project

India’s state-run Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) will collaborate with France’s TotalEnergies to set up a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project at Paradip in eastern Odisha, with a planned capacity of 200 kilotonnes per year, according to a government statement. The two companies are expected to sign a preliminary agreement during the India Energy Week conference beginning January 27.

In addition, NRL and explorer Oil India Ltd will enter into a preliminary agreement with TotalEnergies for the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to meet the companies’ future demand.

During the four-day conference, India’s Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) will purchase 12 million barrels of crude oil from Brazil’s Petrobras for $780 million in fiscal year 2027, double the volume of its 2026 contract, as part of efforts to partially replace Russian oil supplies, a government statement said on Friday.

Indian refiners are revising their crude import strategies, increasing purchases from the Middle East, Africa and South America to offset reduced availability of Russian oil.

The agreement between the state-run refiner and Brazil’s national oil company is scheduled to be signed next week on the sidelines of the India Energy Week conference, the statement added.

Separately, Bharat PetroResources Ltd, a unit of BPCL, is set to sign an agreement with Shell to acquire stakes in oil and gas companies globally, according to the government statement.
