Jakarta: Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman has proposed opening 100,000 hectares of new sugarcane plantations next year, a plan that will require a budget of up to Rp1.6 trillion, reported Tempo English.
In a written statement issued on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Amran said the plantations would be developed across Indonesia, with about 70% of the total area located in East Java.
He said most of the new sugarcane fields would be concentrated in East Java, while the remaining area would be spread across Lampung, South Sulawesi, North Sumatra, and Central Java.
Amran said the expansion programme would involve support from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the police, and the Attorney General’s Office.
According to the minister, the land expansion will begin this year and is expected to be completed in 2026. He said planting activities are planned to restart between January and March.
Amran said Indonesia would stop importing white sugar if the sugarcane development programme in East Java is successful.
