Jamaica: Cash strapped sugar industry gets investment worth $7.5b from Tropical Sugar

Jamaica’s struggling sugar industry is set for a major revival, with a US$50 million (J$7.5 billion) investment from Tropical Sugar Company Limited (TSCL). The company plans to begin construction of a new sugar factory this July in South Clarendon, reports Loop News.

Minister of Agriculture Floyd Green made the announcement on Tuesday, May 27, during his presentation in the 2025/26 Sectoral Debate in Parliament.

“These investors will be leading the restoration of sugar production in South Clarendon,” Minister Green told the House of Representatives. “Through an initial investment of US$50 million, TSCL has leased about 12,500 acres of land for growing sugarcane. Of that, 27 acres will be used to build a new sugar factory and refinery.”

He said the project is expected to create 300 direct jobs, offering a much-needed economic boost for local communities and marking an important step in reviving the sugar sector.

TSCL describes itself as a forward-thinking company focused on sustainable sugar production and renewable energy. The company says it will combine traditional sugar manufacturing with an innovative energy component that uses sugarcane by-products to generate electricity.

Located on the Vere Plains in Clarendon, TSCL’s new facility in Chesterfield will use bagasse—the dry fiber left after sugarcane juice is extracted—to fuel a turbo generator. The plant is expected to produce 12.5 megawatts of electricity, with 7 megawatts supplied to the national grid via the Jamaica Public Service (JPS).

TSCL says this approach supports Jamaica’s renewable energy goals while also boosting the local sugar supply. “This dual-revenue model not only meets local sugar demand but also contributes to Jamaica’s renewable energy policy, ensuring economic and environmental benefits,” the company stated.

Calling it the first project of its kind in the country, TSCL said the initiative highlights its commitment to sustainable development and positions Jamaica as a leader in clean industrial innovation.
