Jharkhand pavilion highlights sisal-based bio-ethanol potential at IITF 2025

Ranchi: The Jharkhand pavilion at the 44th India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 has emerged as a major attraction, highlighting the state’s growing focus on producing bio-ethanol from sisal (agave) plantations, reports The Times of India.

The state information and public relations department said, “Sisal plantations now cover 450 hectares in Jharkhand, and the state aims to add another 100 hectares this financial year. Last year, the total sisal output was 150 metric tonnes, and this year’s target has been set at 82 metric tonnes.”

Jharkhand is rapidly expanding sisal cultivation as part of its efforts to strengthen rural livelihoods. The natural fibre from the plant is widely used to make ropes, mats, bags, and other handmade products, providing income to local communities.

The juice extracted from sisal is being explored for bio-ethanol production, offering a cleaner energy option. Its growing use in medicinal and cosmetic products is also encouraging small businesses. Because sisal can grow even in poor soil, it is becoming an important crop for land conservation and climate-resilient farming in the state.
