Karnal sugar mill staff face action after minister’s surprise visit

Karnal: Cooperative, Jails, Elections, Heritage and Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma conducted an unannounced inspection of the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill on Saturday and ordered show-cause notices to 11 officers and employees, including the managing director, after finding them absent during duty hours, reports The Tribune.

The minister said the sugarcane crushing season was currently underway and any lack of responsibility by officers or staff during this crucial period would not be accepted. He also directed that the mill’s records be produced at his Chandigarh office on Monday for review.

Dr Sharma visited the sugar mill located on Meerut road in Karnal while returning to Gohana from Chandigarh. During the visit, he interacted with farmers, who raised concerns about the poor condition of the road used by tractor-trailers to transport sugarcane to the mill. Taking immediate note of the complaint, the minister ordered repairs to the road.

He later inspected the mill’s administrative block, where several officers and employees were found missing from their posts. He directed officials to issue show-cause notices on the spot, reiterating that such lapses would not be overlooked.

The minister also reviewed the ongoing sugarcane crushing operations and sought feedback from mill officials and workers regarding the functioning of the unit.
