Haryana: Biogas plant to be set up at Karnal sugar mill under PPP model

The Haryana State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited has announced a major shift toward sustainable energy by launching plans for compressed biogas (CBG) plants across the state. A flagship project is slated for the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill, where a new facility will be established through a public-private partnership, reported The Tribune.

Aditi, Managing Director of the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill, said the planned CBG plant would use press mud generated at the mill to produce clean energy. She said the project would help turn waste by-products into renewable energy, supporting a more sustainable use of resources.

She added that the tender process for the project is currently underway at the federation’s headquarters and expressed hope that the Karnal mill would be selected for the plant.

For the ongoing 2025-26 crushing season, the mill has crushed 18.29 lakh quintals of sugarcane, said Aditi.

She also said the mill’s 18 MW power plant has generated 2.185 crore units of electricity to date. Out of this, 1.41 crore units were supplied to Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam. This has earned the mill a net additional income of Rs 8.97 crore.

The mill has already paid Rs 63 crore for sugarcane supplied up to January 15. This covers 83.40 per cent of the total amount due so far and is the highest payment percentage among sugar mills in Haryana.

She further highlighted steps taken for farmer welfare. Under the Atal Kisan Canteen scheme, farmers supplying cane to the mill are offered meals at a subsidised rate of Rs 10. The mill has also arranged a modern rest house with boarding and lodging facilities for farmers during their stay.
