Bengaluru: Beneficiaries under ‘Anna Bhagya’ scheme were getting 10-kgs of rice every month and soon, they will have 5-kgs of rice cut. In place of the reduced quantity, the State Cabinet on Thursday approved the distribution of Indira Aahara Kits (food kits) to eligible families.
These kits, to be supplied through fair price shops, will include 2 kilograms of tur dal, 1 kilogram each of edible oil, sugar, and salt.
Instead of giving the kit to every beneficiary, it will be distributed in different slabs to 1,26,15,815 families who have as many ration cards, reported The New Indian Express.
Explaining the decision, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil said the move aims to curb rice smuggling linked to the Anna Bhagya scheme. He said that the rice meant for poor families was being misused, prompting the government to replace part of the rice allocation with food kits. Patil added that tenders for the supply of these kits will be issued soon.
