Belgavi: Six labourers and two factory officers lost their lives while attempting to repair a concentrated sugar syrup boiler at a sugar factory, triggering protests over alleged lapses in safety measures, reports The Hindu.
Protesters said the incident clearly showed that the factory management had failed to put proper safety systems in place. They demanded compensation of at least ₹1 crore for the family of each person who died in the accident.
The protesters also called on Inamdar Sugars and other sugar factories in the district to strictly implement safety measures on the shop floor and across factory premises. They stressed the need for mandatory safety training for workers before assigning them hazardous tasks.
They alleged that none of the factory’s directors had visited the families of the deceased even several days after the accident, adding to the anger among workers and local residents.
Factory officials later held discussions with the protesters and assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the management.
Several leaders were present during the protest, including Shivanand Kulkar, Sannagouda Sanganagoudar, Raju Bolannavar, Deepak Satoji, Shivanand Kurabet, Mallikarjun Baji, Abhishek Kalal, Somu Thotagi and Pakru Kuslapur.
