Karnataka Sugarcane Farmers Federation urges Centre to revise sugar recovery rate to 8.5% from 10.25%

Kalaburagi, Karnataka: Members of the Karnataka Sugarcane Farmers Federation (KPSS) have urged the Centre to revise sugar recovery rate to 8.5% from 10.25% and demanded that the government form a committee to make a bilateral agreement between sugar factories and farmers and to increase FRP at a recovery rate of 8.5%, reported The Hindu.

The Federation also called for the release of long-pending payments for sugarcane supplied to various factories in the district over the past two years.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, KPSS district convener Sharanabasappa Mamshetty stated that during the 2022–23 and 2023–24 crushing seasons, four sugar factories in the district crsuhed a total of 68.87 lakh tonnes of sugarcane from 55,417 growers.

Mamshetty said that the factories have deducted Rs. 732 per tonne of sugarcane as harvesting and transportation charges against the fixed charge of Rs. 572. In this way, they have deducted an additional amount of Rs. 15.96 crore of 13,291 farmers in the district, as per the news report.

The federation is now urging the district administration to step in and help ensure that the outstanding dues owed to farmers are cleared.
