Sugarcane farmers across Kenya are set to receive higher earnings following the Kenya Sugar Board’s decision to raise the official cane price from Sh5,300 to Sh5,500 per tonne.
In a directive sent to all 15 licensed millers, including recently leased state-run factories, Agriculture Principal Secretary Dr. Kipronoh Ronoh stressed the importance of implementing the new minimum price without delay.
The revised rate, approved by the Cane Pricing Committee, will come into effect on May 26, 2025.
“Based on ex-factory sugar prices over the past three months (February to April 2025), the cane price has been increased from Sh5,300 to Sh5,500 per tonne, effective 26th May 2025,” Dr. Ronoh stated in a letter addressed to managing directors of sugar mills.
He also directed that farmers must be paid on time, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of sugarcane growers and supporting livelihoods in key agricultural regions.
This price increase is part of wider ongoing reforms aimed at revitalising the sugar sector and ensuring farmers receive fair and timely compensation.
