India is playing a pivotal role in the expansion of the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA), positioning itself as a leading voice in global efforts to promote sustainable and clean energy solutions. As a founding member of the Alliance, launched during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, the country has been instrumental in shaping its vision and mobilizing support from both developed and developing nations.
Through robust policy initiatives such as the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme and targeted financial incentives, India is not only advancing its domestic biofuel industry but also contributing significantly to global energy transition goals. By fostering international collaboration and promoting technology sharing within the Alliance’s framework, India is cementing its leadership in the global biofuels sector.
Institutional progress and International partnerships
The GBA formally adopted its Governance Framework during the fifth Temporary Executive Committee (TEC) meeting held on July 24, 2025, marking its transition into a full-fledged international organization. Earlier, in October 2024, the Alliance signed the Host Country Agreement with the Government of India, establishing its Secretariat in New Delhi.
These developments signal a major step toward institutionalizing the GBA and strengthening its international mandate. India’s role as host further enhances its strategic position in the global biofuel landscape.
The GBA’s membership has expanded to 32 nations and 14 international organizations, with keen interest received from other countries and organizations as well.
Economic and strategic benefits for India
The Alliance is expected to generate several benefits for India’s biofuel economy. Among its goals, the GBA aims to provide new opportunities for Indian industries by positioning the country as a global knowledge base and production hub for biofuels — including ethanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG).
India’s active participation in the Alliance reinforces its influence in the global biofuels sector, offering a platform to showcase its advancements and attract international collaboration.
Key initiatives and global outreach
As an international organization, the GBA has undertaken a range of initiatives to promote the awareness and adoption of biofuels worldwide. It has actively participated in major national and international events such as COP28, COP29, the World Economic Forum, and India Energy Week (2024 and 2025). These engagements have enhanced visibility at the intersection of policy and industry.
The Alliance has also hosted curated roundtables, panel discussions, a Knowledge Webinar Series, and released joint statements to further global dialogue on biofuels. Its participation in high-level forums like the G20 and G7 has contributed significantly to the global narrative on sustainable energy transitions.
Public awareness and research publications
To broaden its public outreach, the GBA launched several social media campaigns, including the “Do You Know” initiative, aimed at highlighting key facts and benefits of biofuels. Additionally, it published two whitepapers — “Potential of Non-grain-based Biofuels in India’s Energy Transition” and “Role of Bio-based Diesel in Diesel Transition” — which advocate for the critical role of biofuels in decarbonization and global energy sustainability.
India’s leadership in the Global Biofuels Alliance underscores its commitment to a sustainable energy future. By driving international cooperation, advancing research, and enabling policy innovation, India is paving the way for a cleaner, greener global energy ecosystem.
