Komenda sugar factory disconnected over unpaid utility bills

The Komenda Sugar Factory has been cut off from electricity and water services after failing to pay outstanding utility bills, the government has confirmed, GBC Ghana Online reported.

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare had informed the Parliament that the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Limited disconnected the factory from the national grid and water supply due to unpaid debts.

She told lawmakers that the factory is also struggling with aging and poorly maintained equipment, which has added to its financial burden.

According to the Minister, the plant has the capacity to support the country’s development goals, but continuous technical and operational setbacks have stopped it from working at full strength.

To address the situation, the government has hired a transaction advisor to help find a strategic investor who can revive and run the factory. The process has been given priority in the 2026 budget, with plans to bring both the factory and its farms back into operation.

The Komenda Sugar Factory was established to strengthen local sugar production and cut down on imports, but it has faced repeated challenges since it was commissioned.
