Uttar Pradesh: Lab confirms use of subsidised urea in ethanol plant, police investigation underway

Shamli, Uttar Pradesh: The laboratory has confirmed that subsidized urea, meant for farmers, was being used in the ethanol plant of the Unn sugar mill instead of the required technical-grade urea. Samples collected during a recent raid were sent by the District Agriculture Department for testing, and one of the reports has verified the presence of regular urea, reported Live Hindustan.

The issue came to light on June 26, when the District Magistrate ordered a raid following multiple complaints from farmers about urea shortages, despite the arrival of several urea consignments in the district. Acting on these complaints, District Agriculture Officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav, along with other officials and police personnel, conducted a surprise inspection of the sugar mill’s ethanol plant located in Unn.

During the raid, officials discovered bags of subsidized urea, meant for agricultural use, being used in ethanol production.

The District Agriculture Officer collected three samples of the urea from the plant and sent them to the lab for testing. Based on the findings, a case has been registered against several officials of the ethanol plant following directions from the District Magistrate.

Confirming the lab findings, District Agriculture Officer Pradeep Yadav said, “The test reports have confirmed the presence of regular urea in the samples. Police are currently investigating the matter.”
