The Indian government has recently permitted the export of Pharma Grade Sugar under a Restricted Export Authorization, subject to safeguards.
It has been decided to allocate a one-time quota of 25,000 MT of Pharma Grade Sugar to bona fide pharmaceutical exporters under the restricted category, for the current sugar season. As per the earlier notification, only online applications for the export of Pharma Grade Sugar [under ITC (HS) code 17011490 and ITC (HS) code 17019990] filed between June 20, 2025, and July 20, 2025, were to be considered. However, the government has now extended the last date for submission of export applications.
In a notification issued on July 22, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) stated:
“In continuation to the earlier Trade Notice No. 06/2025-26 dated June 18, 2025, the last date for submission of application for Export Authorisation for Pharma Grade Sugar, has been extended up to July 31, 2025. All other contents of the Trade Notice remains unchanged.“
The procedure to apply for export authorization is outlined below:
-
Exporters can apply online through DGFT’s ECOM system for Export Authorizations (Non-SCOMET Restricted Items).
-
Only one application per IEC (Importer Exporter Code) will be considered for quota allocation.
-
All applicants seeking export authorization under quota may apply online by navigating to the DGFT website (https://www.dgft.gov.in) → Services → Export Management Systems → License for Restricted Exports.
The quota will be allocated to applicants on a pro-rata basis, based on their production capacity. Export Authorizations shall remain for one year irrespective of the end of financial year.
