Maharashtra: 165 mills begin crushing operations; sugar production at 151.48 lakh quintals

The sugarcane crushing operations for 2025-26 season in Maharashtra has gained momentum. According to the latest report from the Sugar Commissionerate, a total of 165 sugar mills have commenced operations as of November 27, 2025.

Currently, mills across the state have crushed a total of 194.09 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, resulting in the production of 151.48 lakh quintals of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate for the state currently stands at 7.8%

Out of the 165 operational mills, 85 are from the cooperative sector, while 80 are private units. The Kolhapur division continues to lead the state in terms of both sugar production and sugar recovery.

Kolhapur: 32 mills are operational, crushing 45.69 LMT of cane with a state-highest recovery rate of 9.09%. Sugar production in the region stands at 41.51 lakh quintals.

Pune: Following closely, the Pune division has 27 mills in operation. They have crushed 46.85 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 8.31%. Sugar production in the region stands at 38.93 lakh quintals.

Solapur: While the Solapur division has the highest number of active mills (36), they have crushed 41.49 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 7.11%.

The current season shows a increase in activity compared to the same period last season. By this date in the previous season, only 150 mills were operational, having crushed just 58.33 LMT of cane with a recovery rate of 6.65%.
